Howdy, Gearheads!
Every member of The Domino Kings is a guitar player, & we’re all into cool gear. I know many of y’all are, too. With that in mind, I set up this page so we can all deep geek together from time to time. The following is a list of axes & amps we used to record Some Kind of Sign. I hope you enjoy the track by track breakdown of who did what where & what we used to do it.
For effects, we used reverb, delay, tremolo & VOLUME. Lots of volume. All delays are courtesy of Lou Whitney’s two Lexicon units, reverbs by Lexicon, Fender or Guild depending on track. Tremolo by Fender, Magnatone, Guild & Silvertone.
GUITARS- 1954 Fender Telecaster, 1963 Telecaster, 1954 Gibson ES 175, Fender ’52 Reissue Telecaster (Rio Grande pickups, "Big Bottom" set), Fender 50’ Reissue Telecaster (Rio Grande P-90 neck pickup, Muy Grande Tele bridge pickup), Charley’s Telecaster (Custom Made with Rio Grande pickups, "Big Bottom" set), Gibson ES 5 (P-90 pickups), Fender 50’s Reissue Stratocaster (Seymour Duncan pickups), Gretsch 6120 (Filtertron pickups), Home made Telecaster (Joe Barden pickups), Fender B Bender Telecaster (Rio Grande pickups), 1963 Airline Rocket lap steel, Martin D-18V, 1968 Martin D-18, 1969 Gibson J-40.
AMPS- 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb (Celestion), 1966 Fender Vibrolux Reverb (Jensen), 1957 Fender Pro (Altec), 1960 Fender Bassman (Eminence), Early 60’s Guild 98 RT (Weber), 1959 Magnatone Troubador (Eminence), Late 50’s Silvertone Model 1482 (Jensen).
1. SOME KIND OF SIGN
Stevie- (Rhythm) ‘52 RI Tele & Silvertone (tremolo parts), ‘52 RI Tele & Magnatone (straight rhythm parts). (Fills & Bridge) 6120 & Vibrolux. (Lead) ‘63 Tele & Deluxe.
Richie- (Rhythm) ‘50s RI Strat & Vibrolux. (Lead) ‘63 Tele & Deluxe.
*Note-Richie & I cut the solos for this song in one take each using the same guitar & amp with the same settings. I cut my part, handed Richie the guitar & he cut his part. The first phrase is me, the second is Richie & so on throughout the guitar break. We cut the entire ride this way to see how differently my hands sound from Richie’s.
2. WALK AWAY IF YOU WANT TO
Stevie- (Rhythm) D-18V. (Tic Tac) Charley’s Tele & Vibrolux. (Lead) B Bender Tele & Deluxe.
Richie- (Lead) 6120 & Vibrolux
*Note- Richie plays intro & second half of the ride, I play first half of the ride, last phrase of the ride & get the last word in after Richie’s outro.
3. A MILLION MILES FROM HERE
Stevie- (Rhythm) J-40, ‘52 RI Tele & Magnatone. (Fill) 6120 & Vibrolux. (Lead) 6120 & Silvertone.
Richie- (Rhythm) ‘63 Tele & Deluxe.
4. PAIN IN MY PAST
Stevie- (Rhythm) D-18V, ES 5 & Pro. (Lead) ES 175 & Silvertone.
Richie- (Rhythm) ‘54 Tele & Vibrolux
5. DARK SIDE OF THE MOON
Stevie- (Rhythm) ‘52 RI Tele & Magnatone
Richie- (Rhythm) ‘63 Tele & Guild. (Lead) ES 175 & Bassman.
*Note- I asked Richie (jokingly) to start the ride with something like I'd play. What you hear is Richie making fun of me, starting his ride by "throwing a brick through the window" , as he calls it.
6. DON’T WANT TO DO THAT AGAIN
Stevie- (Rhythm & Lead) J-40
Richie- (Rhythm & Lead) D-18V
Les- (Rhythm & Lead) D-18
*Note- This song was cut live in the studio, vocals & all, then Les went back & put the percussion on (brushes on a road case). Lou set up a few good mics, we sat in a circle, playing & singing into the air. Les plays the first half of both rides. I play the second half of the first ride, Richie plays the second half of the second ride.
7. IT’S ALL OVER BUT THE CRYING
Stevie- (Rhythm) D-18V. (Tic Tac) Charley’s Tele & Vibrolux. (Fills & Lead) ‘63 Tele & Deluxe.

(Lead) ES 175 & Silvertone.
Richie- (Rhythm) ‘63 Tele & Deluxe
9. EVERY NIGHT ABOUT THIS TIME
Stevie- (Rhythm) D-18V. (Tic Tac) ES 5 & Pro. (Lead) First half- ‘63 Airline lap steel & Silvertone. Second half- ES 5 & Pro.
